Privacy Policy

YouTube Language Level ("the Extension") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy describes how the Extension handles your data.

Data Collection

The Extension does NOT collect, store, transmit, or share any personal data.

All operations are performed entirely locally on your device:

• Video transcripts are fetched and analyzed directly on your machine.
• AI analysis runs via Chrome's built-in Gemini Nano, a local Ollama server you choose to run, or Google's Gemini API using your own API key.
• No data is ever sent to external servers owned or operated by us.

What Data Is Stored Locally

The Extension uses chrome.storage.local to save the following information on your device only:

• User preferences: selected AI engine, language, Ollama model, server URL, and your own Gemini API key (if provided).
• Cached CEFR results: previously analyzed video IDs and their levels, to avoid re-analysis.

This data never leaves your browser and can be cleared at any time via Chrome's extension settings.

Third-Party Services

The Extension communicates with external services only when necessary for its core functionality, and only with services relevant to the analysis engine you choose:

• Gemini Nano — runs fully on-device via Chrome's built-in AI. Nothing is sent anywhere.
• Google's Gemini API (generativelanguage.googleapis.com) — used only if you choose the "Gemini API" engine and provide your own API key. The transcript text is sent directly from your browser to Google using your key; we never see it.
• Your Ollama server (optional) — if you choose to use Ollama, the transcript text is sent to the Ollama server URL you configure (e.g., http://localhost:11434). This server is entirely under your control.

No data is shared with any other third party.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page.
